_The Road
Finding ourselves well past the turn for the Booker T. Washington Memorial, we continued on to Appomattox, missing about 70 miles of the Parkway with the loop. Route 60 was worth the detour, like riding a roller-coaster ... Hee-Ha! ... with mountain twisties taking us into Buena Vista. The Parks The National Park at Appomattox comprises a small village, offering a wealth of information on the Civil War. The Blue Ridge Parkway turns into Skyline Drive at the entrance of Shenandoah National Park. The mountain views turn into forest. A black bear in the road stood up and looked at me as I locked up my brakes, running into the woods before I could grab my camera! If there had been any doubt regarding all the food precautions issued when we camped, they were instantly validated. Lodging There were several motorcycles at Loft Mountain Campground. Our neighbours were a couple from Alabama returning from a month long trip to Maine. Sharing coffee and road stories took us well into the evening. Rosie only has a range of 100 - 120 miles per tank, so it was a relief to find gas available at the Loft Mountain Visitor Center! |
