Orange Lake NY
_The Road
Route 44-55 over Minnewaska is a great cruising road! Gentle slopes with sweeping turns, it’s easy to get carried away and ride too fast. Beware though of wild life such as deer, bear, raccoons, and hikers from the (now) State Parks. The Parks The Shawangunk Ridge, commonly known among climbers as “The Gunks”, was sacred to the Lenape Indians. Much of it is now protected by the Mohonk Preserve, Minnewaska and Awosting State Parks, and the Nature Conservancy. It boasts five sky lakes, several waterfalls, and ice caves, as well as world class climbing. Lodging Skiing today, maybe for the last time behind the Driftwood on Orange Lake, brings me full circle. I learned to ski on this lake, behind this boat, when I was 7. Born here, I am home in these waters like no where else. |
