Cane River & Cane River Creole
_The Road
It was well worth going all the way into Natchitoches to pick up a map of the Heritage Trail, not only did it note points of interest, but took me on some beautiful roads I would have otherwise missed! A local friend commented she wasn’t aware of such places nearby. I must admit I only found them because of the Tour. We need to learn to look closer at our own back yards for interesting diversions! The Parks The manor house at Magnolia is still lived in and was closed, but I stumbled upon an archaeological dig at the slave quarters and learned the brick construction was an unusual “show of wealth”. These two room units were occupied until the 1960s, only receiving wood floors and becoming one family dwellings during the war years. Oakland is much more visitor oriented with beautiful grounds and much to see. I was fortunate enough to meet a lady who grew up there when I stopped at Melrose. She loves what the Park Service has done with the place, but wishes they would hurry with cleaning up the bottle garden as her mother “always kept it so beautiful!” Lodging Back to my “Winter Camp” in Mansura. I get so lonely sometimes. I think I’d enjoy having a companion for this trip! |
