_Day 45 - 29 July - 141 Miles
Custer State Park - Mt. Rushmore
_The Road
Custer State Park was filled with tourists, including its share of dumb drivers! The best recourse is to find a nice pull off and let them increase the distance between you and them! After taking the Needles Highway to Hill City for lunch, we chose our routes based upon where there was a bright spot in the black sky! I was singing Prayer Songs the whole time we circled around Mt. Rushmore and down through the WildLife Loop to avoid the storm. The Parks $10 just to park at Mt. Rushmore, per motorcycle! Nevermind we could fit both into one space. Bogus! We took photos at the entrance sign and found a spot on the highway where could could get a picture of the bikes with the mountain as a backdrop. It was a nice ride through the WildLife Loop with a wide array of fauna near and in the road. A little place called Wolf People provided a rest stop and a chance to visit with real timber wolves. Lodging Deciding to go on into Hot Springs for dinner and gas as a light rain caught us about 15 minutes from camp, we found a disaster area! Trees down, the river was over its banks and the entire town was without power! A tornado had blown through about 20 minutes before we got there. We had a couple broken tent poles, but our camp was otherwise intact. |
