SpearFish Canyon - Bridal Veil Falls
Devil’s Tower
_The Road
Dreams speak to us in symbols, which are often confusing. Making the turn into SpearFish Canyon brought sudden clarity to one I’d had last year, Bridal Veil Falls, Wall SD, the Badlands of the Black Hills. It was a death dream. I was warned. Already there are bikes everywhere! At least the traffic isn’t heavy yet. The weather was great, clear blue skies. The town populations along Route 24 were amusing, they were so small! The Parks The highest elevation and western most point of this trip, Mato Tipila (Bear Lodge) aka Devil’s Tower is the first landmark to be declared a National Monument. Legends from the Lakota to “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” are connected to this site. Dehydration and altitude sickness are very real concerns. Dizziness and nausea sometimes affect low landers even without physical exertion. Go slow, rest, listen to your body! Lodging The mother lode was a truck stop just outside Sundance, hot showers and a computer with internet access in the Driver’s Lounge! Gas, oil, coffee, and souveniers for the folks back home. A late dinner in Deadwood and gas via credit at a closed station brought us back to camp at Roubaix Lake. |
