Hopewell Culture - Wayne National Forest
_The Parks
The mounds themselves appear as nothing more than grassy knobs in a field. The real appeal here is the history of this culture. The fun part was the chance for hands-on experience with an atlatl (spear thrower). The Great Serpent Mound is located about an hour to the south of this location. The Road Picking our way by routes marked as scenic on the map, we followed US-50 to OH- 550, which led to the Ohio River Scenic Byway (Route 7). Lodging Leith Run Recreation Area provides camping along the Ohio River in the Wayne National Forest. We were alone on a small peninsula only a short walk from the bath house. It took only a moment to figure out the small board in the shower was for use as a wedge between the handrail and water knob to keep it depressed. So much nicer than having to press it every three seconds! |
