_Day 70 - 74 23 - 27 August - 99 Miles
Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt
Val-Kill and SpringWood
_The Road
This area can be described as “the whole nine”. US-9, 9G, 9H, 9W, and probably a few I haven’t mentioned. It can get confusing, so be sure which “9” you are looking for! The Parks From New York City to Saratoga, the Husdon River Valley National Heritage Area is rich with parks, from battlefields to Presidential Manors. Enjoy the ride between sites to help avoid overload. Hyde Park alone is home to SpringWood, Val-Kill, and the Vanderbilt Mansion. Take the time to smell the roses in FDR’s garden and tour the opulence of the Vanderbilts. Lodging The house in Pataukunk (cf: Day 18) seems small and plain by comparison, but it is more than I need now that my children are grown and on their own. At one time I thought to maybe open a small B&B, or take in boarders as a retirement income. Better now that it sells to another family raising children, so I can get on my bike and ride! |
