_Day 88 - 10 September - 240 Miles
Lindenwald - Queechee Gorge State Park
Green Mountain National Forest
_The Road
It’s a pleasant ride up US-9W and over the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. A quick stop at the home of President Martin Van Buren for stamps in Kinderhook, then up Route 22 to 7 into Vermont, where it changes to Route 9. Taking 7A, the scenic drive from Bennington to Rutland, we arrived in time to witness the Killington Classic, a motorcycle parade in memory of 9/11. From there is was across US-4 to Queechee Gorge State Park. The Parks Having previously toured Lindenwald, the home of Martin VanBuren, more photographs didn’t concern me. The spiraling staircase was the most memorable point of the visit. The Green Mountains are gorgeous, if a little chilly, this time of year. Filled with quaint towns and covered bridges, there is much to see and do. Lodging The entrance to Queechee Gorge State Park was easy to find, even in the dark, not far from the gorge itself. It has spacious sites and good facilities. Local emergency information, including hospital locations is posted at the bath house. This is becoming a concern for Thom. |
