One lovely day, just before Spring Break, my brother and I begged Mom to let us cut school (I was in High School and my brother in Middle School) so we could go riding. After confirming with us that we would not be missing any exams or other significant grades, she relented and let us play hookie!
It was "one of those days"! We began the day with a 20 mile trail to another school district. Along the way, a vine caught my helmet strap, nearly pulling me off the bike, leaving me stranded unable to hold the bike up with my legs or let go of the clutch to untangle myself. Fnally, my brother realized I was no longer behind him and returned to rescue me!
Later that afternoon, while riding along the pipeline, we came upon a campfire burning out of control in a hay field. We rode the pipeline to the first residence we found and convinced the occupants to call the fire department (this was long before cell phones!) and we waited to guide them ba to where the fire was.
At that point in time we decided it was time to head home. Our trail took us past the school yard. The morning had not been a problem, with everyone sitting in class. That afternoon, however, recess was being held outside due to the gorgeous weather! We were spotted!
By time we got home, Mom had her own story to tell about the phone call she received from the school asking, "Do you know where your children are?" She was laughing as she told us her response ... "They're out riding their motorcycles! They both had scratchy throats this morning, and I didn't think they were really sick enough to keep them home, but you [the school district] sent a note home telling me not to send them to school if they had any signs of a sore throat because of scarlet fever going around!"
Way to go Mom!
