Day 2 - Lake Meredith - Dumas TX
Sitting at Dairy Queen in Dumas TX waiting for Skye. She ran in to rain and had to stop to warm up. I've been here two hours and she just texted from Amarillo, so another hour. We'll see if she up to make Boise City OK, 60 miles up the road and get a room. Let her rest up for a good day tomorrow.
I woke at 6 this morning, rolled over since it was still dark, but didn't go back to sleep, finally getting up as I was fidgety. Looking at maps showed that Fritch Fortress ws only 40 miles away, so I went to Alibates Flint Quarry National Monument. I picked up enough stamps there to fill my TX/LA NPS form for Women in the Wind. I wanted to do a separate form for Colorado, so that worked out.
The Rangers at Alibates suggested Fritch Fortress for photographs, so I spent some time there, at Cedar Canyon and Sanford Yake. If I had known how late Skye would catch up with me, I would have set up camp there. There are several nice looking campgrounds, and I saw another when crossing Sanford Dam. I didn't want to stop on the dam for a photo though.
Three Falls Cove Road was a nice ride on the way to Dumas, though I didn't see any falls. At least there were signs when I came out on 1913 so I knew which way to go! Half the time I am hoping I am still on the route for the lack of road signs off circles and through towns.
Dairy Queen was chosen as a meeting point in Dumas since it has a big, easy to spot sign. I checked in with my friends and looked at facebook while eating. Vibrations were rattling a footpeg loose, so I pulled my tool kit and tightened that up. Now passing time writing in this journal. I'm tired. I am sure she is exhausted!
It was 6 pm by time Skye and Dusty finally arrived. Rather than split up as Dusty headed back to Louisiana, we decided to all share a room in Dumas. First we went to EconoLodge, but the advertised rate of $43 was for the end of August! They wanted $79. We went to the Red Roof Inn just a few doors down for $53.
We hadn't quite finished bringing everything in off the bikes when Dusty looked out the window and saw someone trying to steal his windshield (quick-release)! He hollered and ran the kid off before he had it all the way loose. We brought in everything we could and parked the bikes where they would be on the surveillence camera.
We walked the main drag, each choosing what food we wanted to bring back to the room. Just as we returned, the skies opened up and the deluge began! Checking the storm on radar made me glad we were not camping.
