Swanton
Swanton Motel Office & Manager's Home
Hungry, tired, getting sloppy with "Rosie", the Swanton Motel caught my eye while traveling Route 7 in Vermont. Though I was immediately offered a 10% discount on the $100/night rate for riding a bike, my budget had not included a room for this night, anticipating staying with a friend. However, after going up the road and seeing what was available for $60/night, I turned around and went back! Nolan was pleasant and welcoming, though I had now interrupted his dinner twice!
It wasn't just that the Swanton has a pool, I felt comfortable and safe, as a woman traveling alone. With only a moment's hesitation, we agreed to split the difference between the cost of the Swanton and the other motel.

The Swanton Motel is a rare gem for guests of the road!

It had been obvious that the "kid" in the office was somehow connected to the ownership of the motel, not just an employee, when it dawned on me that he could be the owner! Nolan could very well be in the age range of my "kids", who are now 27 and 31, grown adults fully capable of running their own business. Some people have postulated that it's my lack of grandchildren that lets me forget how "senior" I am becoming! Stopping a moment to remember what my life was like and what I was doing at their ages helps to put things in proper perspective, even though my mom jokes that my lifestyle is like that of a teenager!
Feeling refreshed after my dose of espresso coffee and a bite to eat, I took advantage of the beautiful evening and wandered about taking photographs, feeling no need to close the door to my room while in or out!
Finding bridges across the waterways from Quebec to Ontario was a problem. The original plan was to cross from Quebec into Hogansburg NY, then cross back over to Cornwall, Ontario. Realizing Swanton is only 62 miles from Montreal, offering several bridges, the decision was made to alter my route to avoid the need to cross the border multiple times.
