John, my son's housemate, talked about seeing signs for an Indian Reservation up on Route 52 where the old Tamarack Hotel used to be. Growing up here, this puzzled us both, so I decided to ride up and check it out.
After returning home, somewhat chilled, I looked to see what I could find on the internet about this "rez". 250 acres slated for tax auction by the Town of Wawarsing as of last April.
Apparently there has been much controversy regarding the legitimacy of the tribe and its leader, who had hoped to build another Catskill casino at this location. I was disappointed to find the intent had been to develop a "cash cow" rather than revive the rich Native history of this area!
Post Script: The Tamarack Lodge was completely destroyed by fire on April 8th, 2012. There is nothing left up there now.
