Splitting lanes in Paris, France where it is a legal and accepted fact of moto transportation, carries with it a lesser risk than splitting lanes in the U.S. where it is illegal and unexpected by other motorists. The point is that there is “a time and a place”.
Safety, then, is individual to the rider; based on skill, conditions, and circumstance. Once possible hazards are identified (risk assessment) it becomes possible to minimize the dangers (risk management) through education & planning, mechanical maintenance, and weather appropriate attire. There are always “exceptions to rules” and no one answer that suits everyone.
I was surprised to see a friend who had survived a motorcycle accident (minus a leg) ride without a helmet. I thought, “Of all people …!” Then it dawned on me, maybe for her, surviving another accident was the greater risk.
Become familiar with the pros and cons of different equipment, the varieties of attire, the physical and mental demands of weather and riding conditions. Choose carefully what is appropriate for you as an individual. If you need to explain, they won’t understand.
